Steak Cookoff Association

SCA History

The Steak Cookoff Association is dedicated to building the sport of steak cookoffs. The SCA benefits both cook teams and cookoffs by implementing standardized rules and equal competitive opportunities for each team.

Every cookteam likes to know the rules, know the judging tent is run with integrity, that payouts are guaranteed and that they have an equal opportunity to win. So, after a year of conversations and negotiations with some of the most influential leaders of the steak cookoff community, the SCA was created. Now cookteams can be assured of a fair and well run cookoff when it is sanctioned by the SCA. All SCA-sanctioned cookoffs will have a “SCA Representative” on site to run the judging area and be an ambassador to the cookteams. The SCA Representative will be trained and know all the rules and regulations of an SCA cookoff.

SCA was founded in late 2013 by Brett Gallaway and Ken Phillips at the time there were only 9 steak cookoffs in the United States. In 2014, SCA sanctioned 19 events, in 2015 SCA Sanctioned 47 events including Europe and Canada, 2016 SCA sanctioned 87 events and in 2017 SCA sanctioned 116 events with events in the US, Japan, Canada, Belgium, The Netherlands, The UK, Germany and Australia. 2018 is shaping up to be another great year with an estimated 180 events including new events in Austria, Canada, Italy, Mexico, Switzerland, the Caribbean and New Zealand. Join the excitement and help grow the sport of steak cookoffs.

The SCA’s primary focus is STEAK, but we also conduct ancillary categories to challenge cookers and involve the entire family. Our goal is to create a fun relaxed environment and a fair competition. It’s about cooking not who has the most money. SCA events provide all the steaks at an event to ensure a level playing field for the teams. Our double blind judging process adds to the integrity and the best cook that day wins.

SCA events are family friendly and it’s common to see the entire family participating. We’ve had husbands and wives create their own teams to compete against each other, even father and sons, and sometimes three generations competing at the same event. If you have a passion for grilling and the great outdoors, sign up for an event today. You will meet a great group of people that soon become friends and you too will use #SCAFAMILY.

SCA events are a ONE DAY format held on Friday, Saturday, or Sundays. The typical event begins with a cooks meeting at 10am and awards are held about 4pm allowing teams ample time to travel to an event in a single day.
